Year 1
Welcome to Year 1! Our curriculum builds on the strong foundations laid in the Early Years, helping children to recall what they already know while exploring and mastering new learning. This is an exciting and important year as children develop greater independence and confidence in their learning.
Year 1 acts as a bridge between the EYFS curriculum and the expectations of Key Stage 1. We start the year with plenty of child-initiated, play-based activities before gradually moving towards more structured learning at the tables. Each child has their own tray, coat peg, carpet space and table area, supporting their sense of ownership and independence.
Throughout the year, children will study a broad and balanced curriculum, including Phonics, English, Maths, RE, Science, Geography, History, Computing, PSHE, Art, Design and Technology, and Music. Each half term introduces new units within these subjects, designed to build knowledge and skills progressively.
Learning is regularly reviewed through both formative and summative assessment. Each lesson revisits prior knowledge and introduces new vocabulary, with informal questioning helping to check understanding and memory.
Reading remains at the heart of everything we do. In Year 1, children continue to develop their phonics knowledge and begin to apply this to reading with fluency and comprehension. Our aim is to nurture confident, enthusiastic readers who enjoy exploring books and stories.
