Year 4

Welcome to Year 4! This year, children will deepen their knowledge and become more confident, independent learners. Our English curriculum is built around high-quality texts that inspire thoughtful discussion, creativity and the development of more sophisticated reading and writing skills. We will be exploring exciting books such as ”The Great Kapok Tree”, “The Spiderwick Chronicles” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” to support a wide range of writing genres including dilemma stories, persuasive writing, narrative stories and poetry. Maths is taught daily and continues to strengthen children’s fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills. We build on prior learning while introducing new concepts such as formal written methods, fractions, and times tables up to 12 × 12 to prepare children for upper Key Stage 2.

Our key topics in Year 4 include the Romans, Early Islamic Civilisation, the water cycle, earthquakes and volcanoes, and environmental themes such as deforestation. These topics are designed to encourage curiosity, critical thinking and global awareness. To enrich our learning, we have planned a range of exciting opportunities, such as a visit to the British Museum, a visit to St Alban’s Verulamium Museum and a Roman art workshop, and interactive geography sessions exploring natural disasters. The children will continue to develop their physical skills through weekly PE sessions led by our Sports Coach, and they will build on their Spanish language skills with a focus on conversational vocabulary. Music remains an important part of our curriculum; children will further their recorder skills and explore rhythm and composition with our music specialist. In Religious Education, children will explore key aspects of Christianity, including its teachings, values and major celebrations such as Christmas and Easter. They will also begin to develop an understanding of Hinduism, with a particular focus on how Hindus worship and express their faith in daily life.
