Music at St. John's is considered to be a very important part of the curriculum and life of the school - Ofsted March 2010 reported that 'The quality of singing and the orchestra are superb.'

Over 100 children across the school are currently learning a musical instrument. Please click on the Instruments picture above for more information.

We believe it is very important for every child to have an opportunity of learning an instrument, which is why in Year 2 we begin teaching the children how to play the recorder. This continues to develop through year 3 and 4. In years 5 and 6 children are taught how to play the ukulele. All of our children have access to a wide variety of classroom instruments in our specialist music room, including djembe drums, samba and glockenspiels, as well as a large selection of percussive instruments.

Music

Concerts and Festivals

During the school year there are many opportunities for all our musicians and singers to perform at concerts and festivals.

Harrow Music Service host some amazing opportunities which St. John's School take part in. These include Band Festival, String Festival, Guitar Festival, World Music Festival, Song Festival and Choir Showcase. After a day's rehearsal at Elliot Hall, Harrow Art Centre, the children perform to family, friends and often representatives from the Harrow Mayoral Council. It's when all these musicians come together, the magic happens!

Alongside the Harrow Festivals are many opportunities for performances in the local community too, as well as working alongside other schools such as John Lyon School in Harrow.

trophy

The school awards two musical trophies each year to year 6 pupils. The 'Evans Cup' for outstanding musical contribution to the school, and the 'Grier Cup' for outstanding achievement on a particular musical instrument. Both trophies have been kindly donated by parents of pupils who have attended St John's.
